I endured a lot of personal problems and grief this semester. Working with a clear mind was rare and brief. I found that the structure of the subject was incredibly helpful in terms of assessments, planning and navigating what felt like a huge project to do by oneself. This step by step break down with regular deadlines ensured students like me, (who would otherwise leave everything to the last minute) would not suffer from their own and external risk factors. Thank you, Kate and Pete, for dedication and encouragement this semester.
I conducted my survey late in the semester, and I failed to promote it continually. I found the most success in gaining responses from people by participating in their surveys and linking mine in the comments on Twitter, exchanging favours for one another.
Twitter was key to my success in this subject, and I am sure many others. I found myself checking the #bcm212 twitter hashtag before every class, after every lecture and whenever I had a question that someone else might have asked. This kind of social interaction for learning on twitter proved the usefulness of social media for class, specifically in terms of online university.
I am always concerned when I ride the controversial vegan train for class assignments. Though I only received eleven survey responses and none of them were self-proclaimed vegans I was happily reassured by students’ responses to my questions about ethical consumption. I was pleasantly surprised when my assumption that university does in fact have an impact on student’s relationship with ethical consumption and for the better.
